The Irish famine church
St. Brigid is SAVED !!!
An anonymous donor has come to the rescue of St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church in the East Village, saving the building — which has presided over Tompkins Square Park since 1848 — from demolition and making it possible for the structure to be reopened as a parish church.

Thank You to Our Anonymous Donor

To our anonymous benefactor and dear Friend,

The Committee to Save St. Brigid wishes to express our sincere gratitude to you, your altruistic donation will resurrect St Brigid's Church. Mere words cannot express the resounding joy you have brought to thousands of people. Your generosity will preserve the memory of countless Irish immigrants who worked so hard to build a church in honor of our beloved St. Brigid. It is a monument to the Irish people, whom she loved and the heritage they shared. St. Brigid has had a profound impact in our community, has been home to many immigrant groups for generations, and thanks to you will impact generations to come.

Your generosity has added a new chapter to the story of St. Brigid’s Church. To many of us who have struggled so long, and to many who lost hope, your kind deed seems nothing less then a miracle. In a community enveloped in the riptide of constant change, St. Brigid’s will continue to be a bed rock for the community. It will be a place where Irish Americans will stand in awe of what their ancestors built. A place of refuge for those in need, and a beacon of hope to all. In the near future, when we reopen the doors to our beloved St. Brigid’s Church, we hope you will be among us. While we would love to open our arms to embrace and thank you personally, the Committee respects your wishes to remain anonymous. However, know that you will always be in our prayers.

Thank you, God bless you and your loved ones.

Sincerely yours,

Edwin Torres

Court Ruling

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The Committee to Save St Brigid’s regrets to report On November 15, 2007 the Appellate division of the Supreme Court ruled in favor of The Archdiocese. Although this is another defeat for us and triumph for the Archdiocese, The Committee remains dedicated and Confident that we will prevail. In his dissent, Judge Kavanagh, was right on target when he criticized the Archdiocese for the way this was handled. It is puzzling to us that while Judge Kavanaugh, the only Judge who had an opinion that was favorable to us, supported his dissenting opinion with a lengthy response, yet the other Judges, all of whom disagreed with him, offered no reasoning whatsoever! The Opinion is available for your review (click to download pdf, and read the dissenting opinion )

The Committee would like to thank and applaud Marisa Marinelli and Harry Kresky for their outstanding dedication, the clarity of their vision and perseverance. We are confident that they will save St Brigid’s Church!

On Tuesday November 29, 2007 Marissa Marinelli of Holland and Knight and Harry Kresky , on Behalf of the Committee to Save St Brigid, filed a Motion to Appeal with the Court of Appeal The Archdiocese has agreed to keep the Temporary Restraining Order (The Stay) in place. The Committee asks our friends and supporters to call the Archdiocese (212-371-1011), as soon as possible, to ask Cardinal Egan to reconsider his plans to Demolish our Church. Your help and prayer are urgently needed at this time.

The Committee to Save St. Brigid’s Church remains dedicated despite our defeats. We are confident that we will prevail. We would like to wish all a happy and healthy holiday and a prosperous New Year. May God Bless you and thank you for your prayers and continued support.
